Secrets of a Los Angeles Magician

Archive for July, 2009

I’m currently designing my brand-new Customer Newsletter! A newsletter can be lots of work, but its a great way to keep in touch with my best customers and say “thanks” for their business.

There are a lot of magicians in Los Angeles, and I’m really lucky to be the small success that I am. So I definitely want my customers to know that I appreciate them. Whether they’ve had me entertain at a large company event or a small private party in their home… ALL of my customers are now going to get my newsletter.

I’m going to include a cool motivational article, an update on me, and maybe a crossword or something interactive. The MAIN point is that it will be fun, informative, and interactive.

My goal is to get these printed and in the mail by Friday. Fingers are crossed!

In 2005 I participated in a 3-D video project for a major Japanese electronics company. A few of my magic tricks were shot on ultra-high definition 3-D equipment, and were shown throughout Japan. The REAL 3-d version of this footage requires special monitors and glasses to view in true 3-D. This is a much smaller version that will work on your computer.

In this effect, I turn a one-dollar bill into a five, then a ten, and then a twenty. I have fifty in the end… (sort of… ;-)

Enjoy!

The great people at the Apple Store in Los Angeles couldn’t fix my 18-month old iMac after all… so they gave me a NEW one for FREE! (ALWAYS buy AppleCare… kiddies!)

Turns out it was a hardware malfunction with the system fan… and a logic board replacement wasn’t the solution. So now I’m happily typing away on my new replacement Mac.

I was already a fan with the ease of video editing… but now I’m a TOTAL fanboy. I mean, seriously… what GREAT customer service!

If I had bought a Dell I’d still be on the phone with someone from another country.

Go Apple!!!

PS. I’m uploading the video to Vimeo today. Posting to the blog tomorrow. Hope you like!

New Magic Video Soon

Later this week I’ll upload another cool magic video. This one features footage that was shown all over Japan. I even speak a tiny bit of Japanese… which is magical in itself.

I wanted to post it today… but my iMac has been in the shop for over a week now. It looks like a logic board failure… which could cost $800+ to fix. Lucky me, I purchased the extended AppleCare warranty… so no charge.

In the meantime, I appologize for the lack of pictures and video. We’ll be back at full force soon!

My Independance Day Party went great! I was hired to perform at a country club in the hills, and the audience there was absolutely wonderful. Great people, great staff, and a great atmosphere.

I was especially impressed by the live music. The band was provided by Ace Of Hearts Entertainment. I had met the owner at a networking event before (they’re big in the wedding scene), but this was the first time I’d heard his group live. They sounded great, looked great, and were true professionals.

(By the way… I’m not getting paid to say this! :-)

Seriously though… If you’ve ever tried to hire live entertainment before, you know that there are hundreds of choices out there. It can be hard to hire an band, DJ, or magician you can trust with your important event. I’ve performed at corporate events and private parties all over Los Angeles and Southern California, and I’ve seen my share of mediocre entertainment. That’s why I’m excited about finding this band.

Check ‘em out if you can!

My flag pin ROCKS

Secret Service Flag Pin

Secret Service Flag Pin

Happy Independence Day!!! Here’s a cool story in the spirit of the holiday:

Last year I performed for the Prime Minister of Fiji. He really liked my magic, and afterward the Secret Service gave me this flag pin! It looks just like a normal flag pin, except that it has the Secret Service badge on it.

Nifty, huh?

Well… I’m performing some Strolling Magic at a Los Angeles country club later tonight, and I just might take it out of storage and wear it. I don’t normally wear pins… but today it kinda makes sense.

Have a happy holiday weekend!

Magic in San Diego

San Diego Vacation

San Diego Vacation

I had a show in San Diego earlier this week, and afterward my wife and I were able to catch up with some family who were in town. It was a nice little vacation. This is a photo of me in Balboa Park near the Museum of Man… a really cool Anthropology museum.

While we were there, I saw a street magician performing on the walkway. He was a young guy (very early 20’s) trying to raise money for a european acting school. He wasn’t the best magician I’ve seen… but he did a great job of gathering a crowd and getting the tips at the end of his set.

I enjoyed watching his show… but I don’t envy him. Working on the streets for tips is one of the toughest jobs in the world. While I completely respect street magicians, I’m very happy, lucky, and grateful to be doing what I do. I get to make my living performing for paying clients at some of the best parties in Los Angeles. How cool is that!?!?!? I am one LUCKY dude. :-)

This weekend is Independence Day, so lets all be grateful for what we have and the great country we share!
